fence with repaired slats

Can you repair a wooden fence?

  • All wooden fencing components can be repaired or replaced without replacing the whole fence.
  • Should I replace my fence? Use a small screwdriver and push it in to the suspect rotten wood areas in many places to test the woods structural integrity. If the screwdriver penetrates in a few places then a repair is most cost effective, but if it penetrates in many places then it is worth considering a new fence.
  • Wood porosity  varies throughout a single length of timber. Just because one area has rotted it does not mean the fence needs replacing. As an example, one upright supports may rot through in 2 years but the other upright supports may last 15 years so repairs are cost effectively the way to go.
  • Wooden paling boards can be replaced by removing the nails fixing it to the rail and fitting a replacement paling. The most expensive component of a fence is the paling boards which is why a kick board (also known as a gravel board) should be fitted under the palings at ground level. If the  Palin boards have rotted it is time to change the fence.
  • The kick board encounters the greatest weathering elements of saturation and cheap to replace.
  • U pright supports replacement  means detaching the rails or panels with a high risk of damaging those components. This is why a repair is always the best option. A repair spur method will outlast a new replacement upright support.
  • A rail can be replaced by simply removing the nails which fix the palings to the rail and detach the rail from the uprights. The rail can then be removed and replaced. This is a time consuming job but material replacement cost for a rail is cost effective if there is only a few to replace.
