Should I fix or replace my fence?

• Does my fence need to be replaced? Often the fence components can easily be replaced without replacing the whole fence and often much more cost effective. The greatest cost is often the palings which is the main reason to have a gravel board below the palings at ground level to take the worst of the weathering punishment away from the palings. If the paling boards are ok then it is worth attaching new rails    
• How do you check for rot?  Use a probe like a small screwdriver to push the end into the timber. If the screwdriver pushes through into the wooden section then it needs replacing or fixing. The only way to be aware of the rot on the rail edge or at the post base is to expose those areas.
• How can I make my fence last longer? Posts supports can be put in place to eleviate pressure of broken posts
• Can fence rails be changed? Rails of a fence can be repaired or replaced if you possess the correct tools or a good fencing service can change the rail.
• Can the posts be replaced? posts can be repaired which is likely to have a greater longevity than a new wooden post.
• How can I repair my fence? you can repair your own fence by buying the tools required and watch videos how it can be done.
• Timber Porosity varies throughout one piece of wood so just because a section has rotted it does not mean the complete fence needs replacing. 
• A rotten post is the most common fence fix needed by using a new replacement post, concrete spur, met spike or fixing stakes.
• The rail edge behind the paling boards does not dry out very well due to seasonally cold or wet times of the year from Autumn through to Spring which allows perfect conditions for rot to manifest. The rot becomes noticeable by loose or fallen paling boards. Loose paling boards often mean the rails need replacing.
• If the wooden uprights have rotted at the base, then it is more economical to replace or fix the post.
• If many of the rails or palling boards are rotten it would not be cost effective to fix the fence.
